How might product design maximize the expressive range of Abel Black®?
Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio folded and bent the material to fully exploit its luminosity and sense of depth. The development of Tone of Black grew out of the concept of “Listening to Black”. This series of speakers takes advantage of the endless expressiveness of a minimalist cubic box of Abel Black®. Their designs were constructed from many constituent elements, such as asymmetric front panels offering variable qualities of blackness depending on angle of view; V-cut folded edges to emphasize surface texture differences between verticals and horizontals, and combined hairline finishes that harness the visual depth of Abel Black® with its mirror finishes that give uniform reflections. The acoustic engineer Katsunori Fukuoka developed a sound system to convert Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio’s product designs into operational audio equipment. Fukuoka adopted a multi-drive system in which the amplifier distributes audio signals into high, middle and low channels, to realize the sharpest possible sound.

Abel Black®の素材としての表現域を、いかにプロダクトのかたちで明解に示すか。Teruhiro Yanagihara Studioでは、シンプルな折りや曲げによって生まれる微細な傾斜角が独自の光と奥行きを導き出すことに着目。「Listening to Black（黒を聴く）」というコンセプトのもと、ミニマルな四角いボックスから無限の表情を導き出すべく、スピーカー「Tone of Black」の開発が始まった。眺める位置によって印象の異なる黒が現れる非対称なフロントパネル、素材の際まで色が巡り、垂直、水平面で見えがかりが変化するディテールを強調したVカットのエッジ、Abel Black®の奥行きを体現するヘアラインと均一な光を反射する鏡面仕上げの使い分けなど、細かなエレメントを積み重ね、デザインを構築していった。さらにTeruhiro Yanagihara Studioが考えたプロダクトデザインを素直に、そして的確に音のデザインへと転化すべく、音響エンジニアの福岡功訓がサウンドシステムの開発を担当。高・中・低音の音声信号をアンプ内で振り分けるマルチ駆動方式を採用し、よりクリアな音質を再現するアイテムへと昇華していった。

Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio
Established in 2002 by Teruhiro Yanagihara. With participation from colleagues in Japan, France, The Netherlands and the UK. The Studio works with a wide range of projects for design environments, including furniture, products, textiles and fragrances. For the ABEL BLACK PROJECT, it created Some Thoughts on Blackness, Milan, April, 2024, and collaborations include this second exhibition.
2002年、デザイナーの柳原照弘が設立。日本、フランス、英国、オランダなど、多拠点から参画するスタッフと、空間、家具、プロダクトデザイン、テキスタイル、香りのデザインまで多岐に及ぶプロジェクトを手がける。2024年4月にミラノで開催したABEL BLACK PROJECT「Some Thoughts on Blackness」展のディレクション、作品制作を担当。以来、断続的に意見交換を行い、本展が第２弾のコラボレーションとなる。
Katsunori Fukuoka
Fukuoka began in guitar manufacturing and musical instrument repair, worked as roadie, system engineer and recording engineer. He established Fly Sound in 2009, which currently undertakes acoustic planning for concerts and events, recordings, and acoustic spatial design and construction.
ギター製作、楽器のリペア、ローディを経て、PA、レコーディングエンジニアに。2009年に音響会社Flysoundを設立。現在は、コンサートやイベントの音響、レコーディング、空間音響の設計、施工などをおこなう。
